What are American-made tires?

American-made tires are tires manufactured in the USA. Many brands of tires available in the US market are produced by multi-national companies with production plants located in the US and in other parts of the world. Currently, there are around 100 companies that make tires in the country, four of which make up 75% of the American-made tires market’s annual revenues. These four tire companies are French-owned Michelin, Goodyear, Japanese-owned Bridgestone and US-based Cooper. All of these companies have plants all over the US where either a portion of each tire company’s total tire production is manufactured.

How to tell if the tires are American-made

When you’re planning to buy a set of tires for your car, you usually head to your local tire dealers or visit these dealers’ websites or the manufacturers’ websites to check what tires they have available. Most of the time, they’ll be able to provide specifics of each brand of tire they have, including the model, size, type, load index, speed rating and even a tire’s PSI. However, the dealers might not be able to answer your question whether the set of tires you’re getting are manufactured in US production plants or not. This is especially bothersome if you’re planning to buy American-made tires for your car.

Some manufacturers indicate in the tires themselves where these units were made, making it easier for you to determine if these are American tires. But if you want to be sure that the tires you’re buying are American-made, you can either rely on the tires’ manufacturer or on their tire codes. Goodyear and Cooper are two companies that started out as American manufacturers. They have remained so to some extent as Goodyear still has its world headquarters in Ohio after having become an international company, and Cooper manufactures tires in several locations within the US such as Ohio, and Georgia. Two other tire companies, Dunlop and Kelly Springfield, are owned by Goodyear and also manufacture American tires.

The US Department of Transportation also requires all tires to have a code stamped on them if they are being sold in the US. The code contains the company and the plant that made the tire. The code should look like this: DOT XX XX XXX XXX. The first two letters or a number and a letter after the DOT should indicate the company and its plant where the tire was made.

Why buy American tires

Many Americans argue that it’s ideal to buy American tires instead of tires manufactured elsewhere for a variety of reasons, including the fact that buying American-made products will help in keeping Americans employed. Another reason for buying American tires is that you can be sure of its superior quality over other brands of tires.
